The baja fi sh taco is similar, only it’s made with grilled tilapia and includes avocado and is served in a fl our tortilla. Taqueria la Pasadita (2336 Woodson Road, Overland; 314-428-3832) A topnotch taqueria housed in a former Taco Bell. The tacos fi lled with chicharrónes (deep-fried pork rinds) are the stuff food dreams are made of. Taqueria la Monarca (8531 Olive Boulevard, University City; 314-814-5864) Like the but-terfl y from which it takes its name, this space is humble, but you emerged transformed. The tacos are excellent, heaped with so much meat that you might need a third corn tortilla to hold it all together. Hot Aztec (@hotaztec; 314-540-2949) More mobile Mexican, with a taco lineup that’s to die for. We can never resist well-made tacos al pas-tor — Aztec’s feature pork marinated in achiote and chipotles, grilled alongside fresh pineapple and onion. Vegetarians and vegans should take note of the roasted-vegetable taco, piled with grilled zucchini, yellow squash and roasted red peppers bathed in a light herb sauce. PROPER ATTIRE REQUIRED W/VALID ID A California company has voluntarily recalled 58,828 pounds of frozen raw yellowfin tuna associated with an outbreak of salmonella. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, as of Friday, April 13, the outbreak had sickened more than a hundred people across twenty states and Washington, D.C., including Illinois (ten cases) and Missouri (two cases). The specific product Moon Marine Corporation USA recalled is Nakaochi Scrape AA or AAA. Moon Marine doesn’t sell this tuna directly to consumers but rather (via third parties) to restaurants and supermarkets, which then use it to make sushi and other dishes. And what, exactly, is Nakaochi Scrape? If you love spicy tuna rolls, you might not want to read any further. As the FDA describes it, Nakaochi Scrape sounds kind of like the pink slime of the sushi world: “Nakaochi Scrape is tuna backmeat, which is specifi cally scraped off from the bones, and looks like a ground product.” According to the FDA, many of the reported salmonella cases have stemmed from “spicy tuna” dishes. The agency advises consumers to ask vendors about the source of their tuna before purchasing it. Unfortunately, the FDA notes, vendors might not know the original source: The company name and Nakaochi Scrape AA or AAA were printed on boxes of the product when it was initially sold to distributors. However, the boxes may have been broken into smaller lots for further sale and may not be available to the end retailer or consumer. Therefore, the tuna may not be readily identifi able by retail outlets or by consumers as being from the implicated lots. “When in doubt,” the FDA says, “don’t eat it.” — I AN F ROEB Find hundreds of restaurant listings and reviews, as well as the latest in Gut Check, at riverfronttimes.com All Day Every Day! 8073 Watson Rd.
